dress for fall

Dolls, do you wear dresses all year around? Or are you one of the girls wearing lots of dresses during summer and sticking to your blue jeans all other seasons of the year? Vice versa?
As the last summer days approach, we should all keep our little floral print dresses at hand. A floral dress plus a cozy cardigan make the perfect couple this autumn, don't you think?

drinks: hugo

May I introduce? My new best friend from bar planet. Refreshing, reminding you of a good old Mojito, but with an own personality: Hugo.

  • 150ml Prosecco
  • 50ml mineral water (with gas)
  • 20ml elderflower juice
  • 3 leafes of mint
  • 1 slice of lime
  • 3-5 ice cubes or crushed ice

Mash mint and lime with a muddler. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and should not be shredded. Add the elderflower juice and the crushed ice. Top with Prosecco and mineral water. Cheers!

summer days

Hey dolls, how have you been? Last week I've been caught between work, some other stuff and enjoying every single sunny hour by the lake. So please forgive my lame postings :).

The Lake of Constance is for once incredibly warm, you can just walk in without any ooh- and ahhhh-ing. That has been my afterwork activity for the last couple of days. Who knows how much longer we can enjoy it this year... Maybe you are lucky and live in a part of the world with mild temperatures all year round. Over here we've got quite short summers. So we try to enjoy all hot days as much as we can.

Have a good start into this last August week - take in every beam of sunlight!

sea dog: man's best friend

While enjoying the Ocean one day, during our holiday in Croatia, a little boat caught my eye. On the boat was a family; father, mother, kids and their dog.

Whenever the father dove into the water, the dog watched and didn't stop to whine until he emerged. As the man swam along the boat, his dog followed every single of his movements. One could see how the dog wanted to join his master for a swim
but at the same time didn't like the idea of salty waters... But then, he just jumped in and had lots of fun on a body board.

Do you guys have a dog or grew up with one? My family and I had a best friend, for 9 years. And I still think that dogs are the most amazing animals and loyal friends, ever.

this was: croatia (july 2011)

Having been told nothing but good things about Croatia by some friends, we decided to pack our suitcases ad head direction East Europe. It wasn't until 10 days before the flight took off, that we had booked our plane tickets. And to tell the truth G and I had to admit to one another that we didn't feel nearly as excited about the trip as we usualy feel just before traveling. Which was just stupid because we had amazing two weeks!

Getting out of the plane after a short 90 minute flight from Zurich to Split, Croatia welcomed us with 36 degrees and the smell of the mediterranean coast. A short 30 minutes ride took us to Trogir -a little medieval village built on an island and Unesco World Heritage, with lots of restaurants, bars and little shops.

White and tired as we were, the next day we took the taxi boat to one of the beaches close by. We spent the entire day relaxing and reading at Medena beach, before heading back to Trogir for a delicious dinner and drinks. Having charged our batteries we decided to drive up north a day later and hike through Krka national park.

As it was hot, we chose only one of the many possible routes you can take at Krka national park: A hike downwards to Skradinski Buk the longest waterfall in the parc.

On our way back to our hotel (Trogir Hotel, Sinjska 8) we stopped in Split to stroll through it's streets and shops. We didn't expect much of Split being the economic and adminitrative centre of Dalmatia. But the city surprised us with it's promenade along the harbor and the surroundings of the well preserved Diocletian's palace.

The following morning we packed our stuff in the car and headed down, direction Dubrovnik. Every now and then we stopped to admire the beautiful costal scenery along the Makarska riviera...

We stopped in Makarska to cool off. But arriving at the beach we just had to escape! The place was crowded in a crazy, insane way. It looked like the Majorcan Balneario NÂş 6 and probably is exactly that: East Europe's party beach for drunk party animals. So if you wish to esccape the July tourist masses, a good alternative is Brela. Much smaller but with equal crystal-clear waters.

Surprise fact: As we booked almost last-minute and didn't prepare well, we suddenly arrived border. We had lunch in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the early evening we arrived at Aquarius Hotel in Lapad - Dubrovnik's beach area. Tired from the drive, we decided to stay in Lapad and go for a delicious seafood dinner (once more).

Booking your hotel in Lapad rather then in Old Town is perfect to avoid spending the hot days surrounded by city walls where the stones emit the accumulated heat - but still being only a 10 minutes bus ride (line 6) from the Pile gate to enter the city. So we used to spend the days in Lapad at the beach and head to the Pile gate in the late afternoons to enter the old city of Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik...
...is not called "pearl of the Adria" coincidentially. It truly is a little jewel.
From the moment we entered the old town through the Pile gate and looked down the Stradun to the main plaza, we were mesmerized by it's old stone buildings, little open air restaurants...

The first evening we just strolled through the city. The late afternoon glow in Dubrovnik is striking. The stone floors seem to take on tones of gold and everything beams. We walked down the Stradun and to the old port before having dinner in one of the many little restaurants.

Dubrovnik is unique in that it resisted being controlled by the many empires that ruled much of Croatia throughout its history—Venice, Hungary, the Ottman empire, the Austrians and some more. However, all of Croatia was heavily influenced by these powers and its cuisine still reflects it. You'll find pizza and pancakes all over Dalmatia. With this in mind and having had seafood every single evening so far we decided for pizzas. After dinner we booked a boat trip to one of the close by islands; Lokrum. We chose Lokrum over a trip to the Elaphiti islands because we felt that these might be nice, but not a tourist destination.

Lokrum is a little, green island a mere 15 minutes boat cruise from Dubrovnik.

Thick pine forests and a tiny saltwater lake plus the rocky beach ad to the tranquility of island life. Eventually we found the perfect spot on a rock and took long and refreshing baths in the Adria (it was still 38 degrees...). Swimming in it's turquoise waters was one of my favorite things to do during this holiday.

I'd say that we spent a relaxing day in Lokrum - if it wasn't for the peacocks. There were peacocks everywhere! Hundreds of them running around. I am so afraid of them and every time I turned around, there was a peacock, behind us, above us on a branch, in front of us on the rocks we've settled for a swim... That's how I found myself running away from them quite often... And G found himself laughing at me quite a lot. :)

Back in Dubrovnik we decided to get a lay of the land by walking the city walls (you could also take the cable car and admire the city from above). The walls are almost two kilometres long and amongst the best preserved world wide. They were built between the 8th and 16th centuries and strengthened by myriad towers and bastions. Here and there you could recognise some destroyed walls remainings from the war, but the city has been beautifully restored. We walked the full circle and at some point G wanted to kill me every time I stopped to take a picture. Remember it was hot and the stones added to the heat. However, we were awarded with an amazing view: the city's terra-cotta roof tiles, polished limestone and marble, surrounded by the azure and turquoise Adriatic sea.

The next day we headed back to Makarska to take the ferry to our next stop: the island of Brac. After a 90 minutes cruise we arrived at the port of Sumartin from where a 40 minute drive brought us to our hotel in Bol.

Bol turned out to be a tiny fisherman's village, with lots of little seafood restaurants along the old harbor.

We'd chosen Bol for it's amazing beaches, Zlatni Rat being one of the most famous ones of all Croatia. We'd spend relaxing days, swimming and snorkeling in the sea, eating, reading, sleeping and just enjoying ourselves.

One day we took the boat to the island and city of Hvar and discovered a beautiful island, famous for it's lavender fields, olive groves and historic village. Hvar has something glamorous, something swanky and somehow reminded me of St. Tropez. Unfortunately I had spent the whole boat cruise to Hvar airing my belly and therefore couldn't enjoy beautiful, beautiful Hvar as much as I wanted to. But hey, on that sick boat ride, I found a great pal, a Swedish (so funny!) lady, who felt sick herself. And I swear to god, it was the most funny, entertaining and unreal throwing up experience of my life. :) But that's another story I guess. But what I saw was amazing and I guess that if we visit Croatia again, I'd like to stay in Hvar for more than a day.

A few more days of hangig out at the beaches and bays, eating tons of seafood and pancakes our holiday ended. In the early morning we left for the harbor of Supetar where we took the ferry to Split. Only to drive from there to the airport and fly back home.

Hvala Hrvatska! It was a pleasure.

hairy hair

Refinery29 has declared August the Month of Hair. I love both of the styles above and below but am somewhat unable to do braids myself... I am perfectly able though to get an undone, wavy and slightly messy hairstyle. Here is how I do it:

1. Go to bed with wet hair

2. Get up in the morning and slightly brush the mess
3. Pin two strands up at the back of your head
Simple, right? :)

Do you like braids? Are you able to do them yourself? Are you good at creating hairstyles yourself? How much time do you spend dressing your hair?

PS: Other great looks and the perfect chignon for a bad-hair-day.

the smurfs

My lovelies, haven't you been dying to see the smurfs?

Growing up, a childhood friend and I always played with the smurfs. We had quite a collection going and took them with us wherever we went. I even remember playing with them on a plane while travelling. Plus: I fell into a pond once, while playing with Smurfette. My mom had to rescue me and then we both had to see a doctor, cause it was winter in Switzerland... :)

Yesterday we made it to the 3D movie. I am dreaming since, of having a little Clumsy in my handbag. He would just live with us and come along with me wherever I go. :)
Na na nananana na na na na naaa!

PS: Read here everything about Peyo and the Smurfs's birth.

relaxing weekend!

Friday! Do you have any fun plans for this weekend? It will be raining over here so I am planning on no planning and just going where my mood takes me. :) But thinking of...
  • Listening to Bobby Marley songs
  • Mixing a drink
  • Watching a summer storm. Isn't it cozy to cover up with your favorite blanket in a deck chair on your balcony while thunder and lightning take over the sky?
  • Rethink this :)
That's it for today. I am not capable of more on this lazy Friday. :) Have a relaxing weekend lovelies!

the 90ies x 20

Remember all the songs we danced to in the 90ies? A Danish vocal group paid their tibutes to Dr. Alban, Reel 2 Real, Snap, 2 Unlimited and others by recording the 90ies' hits a capella and captured by 20 cameras.

The guy on the bottom row (second from right) is quite expressive. :)
